Crni Vrh is a subjective documentary photography project portraying the lives of the permanent residents of Crni Vrh, a mountain village on Stara Planina in eastern Serbia. The project focuses on a community living between a traditional way of life and the gradual transformation of its environment through tourism and new development. People, households, animals and the surrounding landscape appear as interconnected elements of a place undergoing change. Crni Vrh is gradually transforming from a traditional mountain settlement into a tourist area. New buildings and infrastructure are changing the physical structure of the village, while spaces once shaped by the needs of permanent residents are acquiring new functions. The photographs were made during this process, recording a space between what is still present and what is beginning to disappear. A central aspect of the project is the coexistence of different temporal layers within the same environment. Contemporary objects and technologies appear inside old houses and modest households, alongside handmade tools, domestic objects and practices connected to traditional life. These encounters do not simply oppose old and new, but show how contemporary life is incorporated into an existing way of living. The relationship between people and their environment is equally important. Life in the village remains closely connected to the rhythms of the mountain, through livestock, cultivation, manual work and the practical use of available resources. Houses, objects, animals and the landscape are not treated as separate subjects, but as parts of the same system, shaped by and shaping the lives of the inhabitants. The documentary character of the project is grounded in extended presence and direct contact with the community. Rather than attempting to present a neutral record, the photographs emerge from a personal experience of the place. Details of domestic life, unusual objects, adapted tools and everyday situations become part of a broader portrait of the community and its relationship with its surroundings. The project does not approach this way of life only through its disappearance. It also observes the knowledge, resourcefulness and forms of adaptation developed within these conditions. Traditional life is presented not as an idealized past, but as a different relationship to time, space, work and everyday needs. Made over an extended period, the photographs follow the village as its environment continues to change. Crni Vrh becomes a record of a moment in which different experiences of contemporary life still coexist: a way of living shaped by the rhythms of nature and physical work alongside the increasing presence of tourism, technology and new forms of development.
